The AdBlue tank feeds a pump, a quality sensor and a dosing injector in the exhaust. Anything other than AdBlue in it puts every one of those parts at risk - but as long as the engine stays off, the problem stays in the tank.
AdBlue is a precisely mixed 32.5% urea solution in deionised water (ISO 22241). The tank's pump module and quality sensor expect exactly that. Screen wash is mostly water with methanol or ethanol, detergents and dye, so as soon as it mixes in the concentration is wrong and the quality sensor flags a fault.
The alcohol attacks the seals in the AdBlue pump and dosing injector, the detergents foam and leave residue, and the dye can stain the sensor. If the engine runs, the contaminated mix is pumped to the injector in the exhaust and can foul the SCR catalyst - a repair that can cost more than an older vehicle is worth.
Warning signs of screen wash in the AdBlue tank
- AdBlue or 'check AdBlue quality' warning on the dashboard
- A mileage countdown to 'no restart' (typically 500-1,000 miles)
- Engine limp mode or reduced power on some models
- Blue-tinted or foamy fluid visible at the filler neck

Do not start the engine. If it is running, switch it off as soon as it is safe to do so.
Do not top the tank up with AdBlue to 'dilute' it - the whole tank has to be drained.

If you have driven the car, switch off as soon as it is safe and do not restart it. The countdown gives some breathing room, but every mile pumps more contaminated fluid through the system. Will screen wash in the AdBlue tank damage my car?
Not if it is drained before the engine runs - the contamination stays in the tank. Once the engine is started, the pump sends the mixture towards the dosing injector, and the alcohol and detergents in screen wash can damage seals, foul the injector and, in the worst case, the SCR catalyst. That is why we say: don't start it, call us.
Can I just top the tank up with AdBlue to dilute the screen wash?
No. The quality sensor measures urea concentration, so a diluted mix still reads out of specification and the warning stays on - and every drop of screen wash still goes through the pump. The tank has to be drained and flushed.
The AdBlue warning light is already on - is it too late?
Usually not. The warning means the sensor has detected the contamination; it does not mean the system is damaged. After a full drain, flush and refill we clear the fault codes and check the pump and dosing injector with diagnostics. If something has been affected, we will tell you before any further work.
How long does an AdBlue tank drain and flush take?
