AdBlue is designed to be injected into the exhaust system, not the engine. When it's accidentally put into the fuel tank, it can corrode fuel lines, injectors, and the fuel pump almost instantly.
Because AdBlue is water-based, it doesn't mix with diesel. It sinks to the bottom of the tank and is the first thing drawn into the engine if you turn the key. Once it enters the high-pressure fuel system, the repair costs can reach thousands of pounds.
It makes no difference whether the AdBlue went into a diesel tank or a petrol tank by mistake, or whether it was a full nozzle or a couple of litres - the tank needs draining before the engine runs.

Can I pump AdBlue out of a fuel tank myself?
No. AdBlue needs specialised pumping equipment and the contaminated fluid must be disposed of as hazardous waste. A standard siphon will not remove it completely, leaving your engine at risk.
What if I already started the car after putting AdBlue in?
Turn it off immediately. The longer the engine runs, the further the AdBlue travels into the fuel system. The damage may be more extensive, but a deep flush can still save the fuel lines and injectors in many cases.
